About Slayer
Slayer was a Huntington Park, California-based thrash metal band. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, guitarists, formed the band in 1981, along with drummer Dave Lombardo and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Slayer, along with Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax, became one of the "big four" thrash metal bands due to their fast and aggressive musical style. Araya, King, drummer Paul Bostaph (who replaced Lombardo in 1992 and again in 2013), and guitarist Gary Holt made up Slayer's final lineup (who replaced Hanneman in 2011). Jon Dette, the band's drummer, was also a member.
In the original lineup, King, Hanneman, and Araya all contributed lyrics to the band, and King and Hanneman wrote all of the band's music. Album bans, delays, lawsuits, and religious group criticism have resulted from the band's lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as serial killers, torture, genocide, organized crime, secret societies, occultism, terrorism, religion or antireligion, fascism, racism, and war. Its music, however, has been highly influential, with many bands citing it as a musical, visual, and lyrical influence; the band's third album, Reign in Blood (1986), has been described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums.
Slayer released twelve studio albums, three live albums, a box set, six music videos, two extended plays, and a cover album over the course of their career. In the United States, four of the band's studio albums have been certified gold. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Slayer sold 5 million copies in the United States between 1991 and 2013, and over 20 million worldwide. The band was nominated for five Grammy Awards, winning one in 2007 for the song "Eyes of the Insane" and another in 2008 for the song "Final Six," both from the album Christ Illusion (2006). Slayer announced in January 2018 that it would embark on a farewell tour, which took place from May 2018 to November 2019, after which the band would disband.
